miscellaneous monday: running playlist.

22 Feb

(source)

I’m running my first half-marathon on May 1st – the Cap City Marathon to be specific. I’m following a training guide and everything. I’m up to the 6 mile point. Considering I’m not much of a runner, my main goal is to run the entire thing without stopping…even if that means it may take me hours. I’m less of a racer and more of a dreamer. A major personal goal will be accomplished if (no, WHEN) I drag my butt across that finish line.”

I always need some musical motivation to run even a mile. I thought I’d share some songs that appear during my workout. :) Playlist.com allows you to create a playlist and post it nearly anywhere (including on your desktop). Other good playlist sites that are free include Mixpod, Last.fm, or Grooveshark.

WordPress does not support flash player playlists – therefore, to hear/see the playlist click on “POP-OUT PLAYER.” You’ll be able to listen to all the songs by doing this. I’m sure there is a way to embed the player but the task seemed very time-consuming and I have to study for a massive test in my grad class.

Here are some of the videos of the songs – some are unofficial versions (i.e. a picture with the track playing). :)

musica and pintura.

OH, YES. I am awake at this very late (or early) hour. I’m on a creating rampage. Painting up a storm, crocheted ten more granny squares and currently being serenaded by Greg Laswell. I’m fairly disappointed that I missed seeing him in C-bus last week at the Ramba Cafe while I was vacationing. I love his soothing, mellowness. Makes me want to watch clouds for some reason (or maybe I’m starting to get delirious). Sleepy, sleep lovelies!

((psst. speaking of paint…make sure you stop by to see this monday’s miscellaneous post. eye candy is on the way!))

columbus’ finest.

9 Jul

I’m a little obsessed with the following song. Luckily, CD101 (THE alternative station for Columbus – ha, their tag line could use some work) overplays the little ditty. Mat and Kim are playing at Summerfest (@ the LC) on August 22nd. $5 to see a whole lotta good bands. I’m so there.

While I was listening to that very song on that very aforementioned radio station very early Tuesday morning, I suddenly saw some beautiful swirling red, white and blue lights in my rear-view mirror. At 7:14 AM, on my way to teach summer school on the other side of the city, I was daydreaming. Thinking about my need for coffee, upset about waking up late, and especially frustrated with my major headache. The oh-so-nice police officer really didn’t care about that as I went 51 mph in his 35 mph speed trap area on Hamilton Road. He heard no denial from me about my committed crime but, boy, was I annoyed with my non-attentive self and his copper ‘tude. Maybe he needed some coffee, too. Anywho, learned my lesson but at the cost of a pretty penny. Crummy start to a day, huh? Can’t say that it was my first ticket…and not sure if it’ll be my last. I would have much rather received the lovely pink ticket if I was purposely speeding…and not just in la-la land.

Wake up, Micki!

P.S. Psst. Speaking of musicccc…I just bought our tickets to see Snow Patrol in September. Excited!

I’ve been painting up a storm. I’ve gone through 6 mini canvases already. Using summer inspired colors. Tropical aquas, granny smith greens, blueberry blues, butter lemon yellows. I’ll update on the results of my collage of canvases. Looking to put them in my bathroom.

Listening to the following inspires me to create: Iron & Wine, Joshua Radin, Jose Gonzalez and Citizen Cope. Can’t get enough of these albums:

The following video is of Sir Ken Robinson on speaking about “schools killing creativity.” Reasons why you should take the time to watch:

  1. He’s hilarious. I love Brits.
  2. He has very valid points about how education systems can be factory-like. Students as raw materials and teachers as conveyors of simple knowledge. The ultimate argument about growth in learning and knowledge through creativity. He also talks about an idea he calls “academic inflation” – that a student isn’t as valued because the things they are good at are ranked inferior or even stigmatized because they are creatively-based. “Suddenly degrees aren’t worth anything.”

back to curriculum evaluation project. boo.
the sunshine, pool and a non-school book is calling my name…

storytelling.

21 May

Most recently, I’ve been enjoying the musical talents of P.T. Walkley. I wasn’t hooked at first but lyrically I can’t get enough of his tunes right now. Listen here: P.T. Walkley’s Music.

The song “Why” is simple but euphonious,  pulling me in and causing me to hit repeat a few times – a sure sign that my ears have hit the melodic jackpot. Oh, I won’t forget to mention that Sean Lennon, offspring of an acclaimed and completely original Beatle, plays with Walkley on several tracks of the album including “Why.”

The little ditty I’m addicted to includes the following lines:

“There seems to be a break between
the things we say and things we do
But if you dream of you and me the way I do
Gonna see this one through.”

For the rest of his album, Mr. Macy Walks Alone, it’s a folksy, indie-infused production with strong storytelling themes and just a tinge of old country. Very un-manufactured. Intimate yet whimsical.

“Intimate yet whimsical” would be a great thing to have written on an epitaph. Whoa, slightly morbid – sorry. You have to admit, though, that it would be nice to be remembered that way…
