a little madelyn.

24 Feb

Here are some photos from my recent shoot with little Maddy, Beau and Suzie’s new bundle of pure joy.

I often used the healing brush, appropriately named for this occasion, to cover up the tiny scratches she gave herself. Though her fingernails are smaller than my eyelashes, she managed to do a little damage to her beautiful baby skin. Otherwise, in so many ways, this family was a dream to photograph. :) So fun and so beautiful. Thanks again, Carlson’s!

I’m hoping to UPDATE my Gray Door site this weekend!

Ciao, bellas!

    privacy issues.

    13 Dec

Hey, friends. I’m sad to say that I changed most of my Flickr sets and collections to private. I noticed that some of my photos were being downloaded and claimed as taken by others. That’s the internet for you! Therefore, some of my older posts may have broken pictures because Flickr links were used. I apologize for that!

If you would ever like to view a photo or my Flickr, just let me know and I’ll send you a guest pass link. (Gives you easy breezy access to see the photos).

In the mean time, the following set of Liz and Ryan’s engagement session can be seen publicly. The settings will change soon. Please feel free to view them now and get ready to see some major in love moments. :) Thanks, again, to Liz and Stroop for allowing me to take your pictures. What a blast at the Statehouse!

    art & emotion.

    11 Dec

Ok, so what if I get slightly emotional when editing couple’s pictures? I love that love can still move me. It gives my somewhat cynical heart hope to know that it can still produce emotion and be inspired. I’m not implying that those abilities were gone but sometimes they get lost in the translation of the daily grind. And I am not ashamed that a picture, accurately and thoroughly depicting the depth of love, may cause the welling up of a tear. :)

    Here’s to feeling loved. Cheers.

More Keller and Scholz/Stroop pictures to come!

P.S. If you have the opportunity to see Rob Bell’s Drops Like Stars tour, then go. I know everyone says this: I needed to hear every word. That’s the beauty of Bell’s messages – they’re simple and obvious. The art of solidarity – to know that “we’re all in this together” (a la musician Ben Lee) is what helps us get through the mess of life. Presence is enough to heal. So easy to forget, huh? Thanks, Mr. Bell, for reminding me that I serve the “God who wastes nothing.”

Off to celebrate this hunk’s birthday (well, it was Wednesday). I’m giddy with excitement to give him his gift – I’ve been saving a bit for it. :)

    gray door photography launch!

    2 Dec

Well, my friends, my photography site is finally up! It was a labor of love – I worked on it any free minute I could find. I’m ridiculously excited about how it turned out – simple, clean, and fresh (and inexpensive for me!). Please, please let me know what you think about the site and feel free to send me a message via the site. :) Also, if you’re interested in getting any photos done, email me and I’ll send you my pricing options! I am booked for four weddings next year (the weekends are getting filled quickly – and don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten that I’m getting married in there somewhere, too!).

    Enjoy!

“Also referred to as the ‘Human Web’ refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is at most six steps away from any other person on Earth. It was popularized by a play written by John Guare.” (source)

There are some things I love that seem to be one step away from something else I love.
    I’ll prove it:

I love libraries (especially color-coded ones)

    (source)

    Libraries contain books:

One of my favorite books to read as a kid was From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg (I must have read it eleven times):

My beautiful mother introduced me to this book.

She got to fulfill a lifelong dream this past summer by visiting the very setting of Konigsburg’s beloved book, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met, of course, houses some of the world’s most beautiful demonstrations of art:

And because of visiting the Cincinnati Art Museum when I was in high school, I fell in love with photography through Robert Frank‘s work.

Photography brings me back to the beginning: I will always look at the photography section of any library before leaving. :)

Basically, Adobe Photoshop and I have become the best of friends as of late with all the recent photo jobs (which I LOVE!). Stay tuned for more Gray Door Photography goodies – including the launch of the new site!

    23 Oct

Since I have oh-so-neglected my blog and “miscellaneous mondays,” I’ve decided to post a few eye candies that I’ve stumbled upon.

go check out the tutorial to knit your own garter. you BETTER believe I’m doing this for my wed-izzle. already keeping my eyes open for the perfect ribbon.

The “i love you more than blank” project can be found here. All I can say is…whoa, fascinating. Kind of addictive like freerice.com and PostSecret.

    i love you more

Here were some of my favorites. The yellow, green, and aqua hearts apply most to my life. :)

Gotta get this shirt from craftster.com.

Though the stress level is on overload, I still have been trying to take time to step away from grading, grad classes, papers, yearbook mayhem, etc. (For example, I have a fifteen-page paper I should be typing instead of these very words.) However, I’m a priorities girl or at least I try to be. I have been art journaling a lot while doing my devos. I have been doing a lot of DIY projects for our wedding. And I’ve even been able to squeeze in some pleasure reading (I’ll post a book review on Brain Rules by John Medina – super interesting book and I had to get it from the SCIENCE section at B&N. Yes, that’s how highly recommended it came – since I ventured into the land of unknown and disliked. Ew, science. :)). Of course, runs and walks with the Till-ster and T-roy have been happening, too.

    ANNOUNCEMENT!
The most exciting side project I have been meddling with is launching my own photography site. It’s in the works, folks. Get ready. It’s going to be epic. :) My portfolio is growing day by day. I’m so thankful for all the individuals who have allowed me to capture the little glimpses of their lives. My most recent shoot of the lovely Beane family was a blast! What a fun family. :) You will be able to access my site very soon! In the mean time, enjoy the sneaky peek of a logo in the works:

Raise your hand if you’re glad the weekend is here! Enjoy. :)

P.S. Musician Dustin Kensrue’s version of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” just popped up on my last.fm radio. Now I’m ready for Christmas music!

    i want to try this!

TTV (through the viewfinder) photography is a unique and creative process that produces images like the ones below. Grainy and square. TTV photography usually uses a digital camera in conjunction with a vintage TLR camera such as a Kodak Duaflex or an Argus (or any other camera that has a viewfinder large enough.) The photograph is composed through the viewfinder of the vintage camera, then a photograph is taken of the viewfinder with the digital camera. The process may look like this:

Here are some of my favorite TTV pictures I found on flickr:

I may have to do some experimenting with TTV. :)
One thing I know for sure – I need to get out of my little townhouse where I’ve been productively planning my first semester of the school year. The paint/repair guys are working on the apartment next door – the hammering and floating cigarette smoke is driving me slightly crazy. Time for an outing!
