TROY!

(To show that I’m a good sport, I even made him a crown!)

If you remember, the original challenge was to make $50 cash last the entire month of February. With the month over, it’s now time to see who won and who has to do dishes for an entire month. He beat me by a monetary landslide with $17.75 left. My wallet had the meager $4.38 left. Cue failure music. Being the sore loser that I can be, I will argue that he has a slight advantage with his business traveling on the weekends (hello, charging it to the school while Micki has ANOTHER bowl of cereal or soup for a meal.)

Troy didn’t keep track of his $50 but I made sure to do so. Mostly, I was curious where my money goes and what habits did I not even realize were repeated offenders. Where did my $45.62 go?

$6.87 – Decemberist’s album (“The King is Dead”) on vinyl (difference after using a leftover birthday gift card)
7.68 – Noodles & Company with Laurie and Andrea
$8.43 – Coffees from Panera, Starbucks and Tim Horton’s
$6.56 – vest from Kohl’s (difference after coupon)
$5.38 – Valentine’s candy for my students
$9.41 – crafty stuff from JoAnn’s
$1.29 – 20 oz. bottle of Diet Coke

How easily and quickly the money goes!
We did cheat TWO TIMES! Shame, shame.

  1. Valentine’s dinner at North Star Cafe.
  2. Refill on some fresh foods (I was dying for more fruit, sweet potatoes, and greens). I learned that I definitely can’t do the month-at-a-time grocery shopping. I do, however, need to know when and how to buy certain stock items that can stay in the cupboards.

We learned a lot about our spending habits over the month…

  1. We socialize with friends way too much through eating out. Some of our favorite gatherings this month included having friends over for meals WE COOKED or going to other homes for meals. Let’s get back to community in our own homes, yeah?
  2. I need to not be Miss Lazy Pants and make my own coffee. I have an amazing coffee maker, grinder, and some fantastic beans (thanks to Tova at Pasadena’s Jones Roasters!). Time to stop using the excuse of being in a rush and to start setting the timer at night.
  3. Troy learned that he can still have a good meal by packing his lunch instead of depending on the nearby Subway. Though the $5 foot-longs were definitely calling to him…
  4. We can depend on inexpensive ways of entertainment. Instead of going out to the movies, we explored our Netflix. :)
  5. If I don’t go into a store, I can’t spend money in the store. If I go into the store without a specific item in mind, I will buy just to buy. Simple (but powerful) concepts.

We’re blessed and together, as a couple, we’re discovering how best to use our blessings in ways that will glorify the Lord and save for our beautiful future.

(Random photo from hiking in the Smokies over Thanksgiving!)

So, be sure send congrats to the winner. He’s presently wallowing in his glorious win with his crown still on. :)

xoxo.

frugal february!

2 Feb

The Current household has established a CHALLENGE for February, aptly entitled “Frugal February.”

The basics:

Who? Micki “The Money-Slasher” Current and Troy “Cheap-O” Current.

What? Each of us get only $50 cash to spend for the month. This does NOT include bills, tithe, and gasoline. Our fridge has been STOCKED (a rarity – we usually just buy for 1-2 weeks at a time). So, no eating out, no Friday morning coffees (the highlight of my work-week), no unnecessary clothes, etc. When I win Whoever wins the challenge will get the remaining cash of the loser and the loser will have to do the dishes for a MONTH (a chore abhorred by all in this house).

When? The ENTIRE month of February. Why, yes, we did pick the shortest month of the year for this challenge.

Why? We have some fun exciting things we’re saving up for and want to cut back on our spending expenses.

We’ll update you on the progress. Basically, there’s nothing to worry about because I’ve got this IN THE BAG. I was born with competitiveness coursing through my veins.

it’s july. so…

1 Jul

be here. now.

16 Jun

Let’s just get married already, ok? I’m on wedding overload between all the photographing, participating, and planning. Loving every minute but ready to be a Mrs.

That’s all. Hope you’re having a splendid summer. Sorry for my absence. I’m a busy, busy girl. :)

you + me.

26 May

Go here check out the sneak peak of our engagement photos by studio3z. We’re over the moon about them and can’t wait to see how the rest of them turned out. Jess and Brett are by far the hippest married photographers I’ve ever met. We’re very, very excited for them to be there to capture our wedding day.

Can’t wait to share all the little DIY projects my mom, sister, and I are doing for the wedding. Don’t worry I’m photographing them as we go but, of course, everything has to be a surprise. I love my crafty mama.

Only 5 more days of school! JOY!

goodness gracious! three years.

13 Apr

Hey, little blog world. Sorry I’ve been so inattentive to my little space in the blogosphere. I just finished up my very refreshing spring break. For the first time in YEARS, I didn’t travel except to Fairfield. My mom and I conquered several wedding projects. Being a teacher, WHEN Troy and I got married wasn’t really free to any day of the year and at first I was slightly frustrated that we had to wait until the summer. But now I couldn’t be more thankful for the time and money to get things done properly. I am BEYOND blessed to have an amazingly artistic mama who takes my little bizarre visions and helps them turn into a reality. And I’m so thankful for the patience of Troy. Can you believe we’ve been dating for THREE YEARS as of TODAY?!? Crazy coconuts.

Let me tell you about this fiance of mine. He’s obsessed with old people. Sometimes I don’t get it. In fact, though I’m glad he’ll be by my wrinkly side, I’m terrified about becoming old. Mostly I don’t want to forget things or be immobile. I know it’s the circle of life and Troy loves it. He thinks most elderly people are charming. In general (and I really mean general – like encircling everything), he’s more accepting than I am. I’m hoping this great trait of his will keep rubbing off on me.

I can see Troy as an old guy, though. He’s already a hunk but add some wrinkles, a little hunch to his tall stature, and an orthopedic shoe shuffle…well, I know I’ll start thinking old people are amazing, too. :)

Three years: just the beginning. Love you, Troy Jacob.

In other news, the new MGMT album is fantastic.  And the Black Keys album is stuck on repeat on my laptop.

I’ll leave you with this little note:

xoxo.

5 things.

25 Feb

This little post idea was borrowed from another blog. Just another random way to organize some random thoughts and waste random time.

5 Things I am looking forward to:

The weekend, warm weather so I can take Tilly to the dog park, finishing the huge theory paper hanging over my head, our wedding, and getting my new camera!!!

5 Things I did yesterday:

Ran 5 miles, went to a professional development conference on co-teaching, enjoyed some yummy Wendy’s chili, battled some wicked heartburn (from previous action), and watched some Olympics with the boy.

5 Things I wish I could do now:

Lay on a warm beach, save some of my students from their home-life, lose the last few stubborn pounds, get a soy misto from Starbies, and go hiking with my dad!

5 Places I’d like to travel:

Hawaii (with my soon-to-be hubs), back to London, England, Seattle (coffee is on my brain), Australia (because Troy wants to go), and Boston (to see the BoSox play).

5 Cute things I’ve found online lately:

How cute is this?! I have to admit that I’m excited for Toy Story 3. I was always a fan but I was pumped after I watched the trailer.

Um, rainbow pancakes? YES, PLEASE.

Found on Green Wedding Shoes, one of my favorite blogs, this little handmade board of nails and string is a-mazing. Done by Kyle Read over at Behance. You better believe that I’m going to try to reproduce something similar for us. “Try” being the key word. :)

Come on, weekend, get here quick!
xoxo.

a love note.

14 Feb

The last valentine I ever hope to have is Troy Jacob Current.

His love overwhelms me sometimes. Though most view him as that goofy, fun guy everyone loves to have around, I know firsthand the compassionate and caring side. He’s a gentle giant and my source of all things comfortable. His strengths sneak up on you instead of smacking you front and center. I look forward to living the rest of my life next to him. And I know when we’re old and wrinkly we’ll still be fighting over who is funnier and which episode of The Office we should watch. I know he’ll still grab my hand when he sees a patch of ice. And I know he still won’t laugh at me when I fall asleep with ten minutes left in the TV show. I will never grow tired of his little, quirky ways of showing “I love you.”

Tell someone you love them today.

warm. warm. warm.

12 Jan

I’m dreaming of Hawaii.
Warm beaches to lay on. Volcanoes to climb on.
Clear waters to swim in. And plenty more beauty to see.
Over the holidays Troy and I booked our HONEYMOON (holy smokes!) on Kauai island. We’ll be staying on the eastern part of the island in Kapaa at a lovely timeshare resort (my parents gift to us!). Needless to say, we’re pumped!

Now, just have to get through the rest of this school year, both teaching and taking classes. I think my new grad class, a literacy theory course, will be a doozy but I’ve always thought learning about learning was very interesting. (Geek alert!) Which reminds me, doesn’t anyone else completely love the Kaplan University commercial? I mean, geesh, I’d go there after that kind of pep talk. And the “professor” in the commercial is Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince! Watch it here.

On an unrelated note, I saw this online today:

I looove nail polish AND Alice in Wonderland. I’m super duper excited about the upcoming remake of the movie. Ever since I wrote an undergrad paper on Lewis Carroll and Through the Looking Glass, I just love all things Alice.

Alice says, “If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?”
